The first US Open was played 124 years ago at the Newport Country Club in Newport, Rhode Island on 4th October 1895. It was played over 36 holes in a single day. The premier competition had 11 entries with 10 professionals and one amateur. Horace Rawlings, an Englishman hosted at the Newport Country Club was the winner and had only arrived in the US the same year to take up a position in the club. The purse at the time was $150 and a $50 gold medal with his club receiving the Open Championship Cup trophy which was presented by the USGA.
British players won and dominated the tournament till 1911 when the first American, John J. McDermott, won. Since then, there have only been winners from six other countries with the most notable one being South Africa whose players have won the competition five times since 1965. Besides South Africans, there has been a New Zealand player, Australian, Argentine, and a Northern Irishman.
The US Open is a competitive tournament often characterized by tight scoring by leaders.
The youngest competitor has been Chinese golfer, Andy Zhang, who participated at 14 years in 2012.
In 2014, the largest number of golfers, 10, 127 players, qualified for the US Open.
The US Open Trophy dates back to 1895 when it was presented to the winner at Newport Golf Club. It is presented to the hosting club of the winner every year at the end of the tournament in a ceremony and kept for a year. The originally designed trophy was lost in a fire tragedy in 1946, but its artistry was maintained in the re-commissioned 18-inch-tall sterling silver trophy.
The 2018 US Open had the most substantial payout in US Open golfing history with a purse of $12 million and the winner receiving $2.16 million. The 2019 US Open will likely have the same payout and moneybag.
